• ISC/Special Needs Students:

At this time, our program unfortunately isn’t set up to support students who need one-on-one assistance or significant sensory accommodations. Because the class relies on independent use of laptops, headphones, and MIDI controllers — and the environment tends to be pretty stimulating — it isn’t always a great fit for students who need additional support beyond typical classroom accommodations.

That said, if an ISC student is able to participate successfully in a standard after-school group setting without additional staffing, they’re absolutely welcome to join.

• Accessibility and Sensory Support:

We don’t currently have formal sensory supports or specialized modifications we can provide. If there’s something specific Atkinson can assist with on-site, we’re always open to chatting, but our scope is limited here.

• Spanish-Speaking Staff:

We do have one Spanish-speaking instructor on our team, but their availability is only after 3:00 and doesn’t currently align with Atkinson’s schedule. If that changes or if we add more multilingual staff, I’ll let you know right away.

Accessibility Information

It is our goal to help make after school enrichment accessible for all students, no matter their physical or learning needs. Some of these programs have limited resources to provide this support, but it’s something we ask of each program coordinator to better understand their capabilities. Notes from several programs so far are below:

Chess Wizards

• ISC/Special Needs Students and Sensory Support:

Our programs are open to all students and we welcome those with special needs! Accommodations would be specific to each individual student. Our classes do move at a slower pace when needed, and we can adapt instruction, pairings, and activity flow to support students individually. However, we would need some guidance/assistance with managing ISC student support in a shared classroom since the instructor’s attention is distributed across the entire group. We genuinely want everyone to feel welcome to participate.

• Spanish-Speaking Staff:

Many of our staff do speak Spanish, however it is not a formal requirement for hiring.
